Most narratives of auditory modernity center on notions of how the west became modern. There are many other stories that remain to be told. This session will focus on two other aural modernities, as experienced in Latin America and in the Islamic world. Ana Maria Ochoa is an expert in popular and traditional musical cultures in Latin America. Among her books are Música en Transition and Entre los Deseos y los Derechos. Charles Hirschkind, author of The Ethical Soundscape and co-editor of Powers of the Secular Modern, has researched sound media and religion in urban centers in the Middle East and Europe. With this seminar we hope to continue the narrative thread of our seminar from the first session and augment it with competing narratives of global sound.
